Eager
Director: Allison Schulnik
Sweden
Duration:
09:31 min

Drawing from sources both autobiographical and inspirational, Eager is a poignant journey set between a timeless void and supernatural abundance; it is a celebration of the moving painting. An experiment in animation as dance (the artist was trained as a dancer), its subjects are choreographed in abstract, emotive gestures. The line is blurred between the material elements of painting (texture, color, form) and the physicality and movement of ballet and theater.

Etude* a day

Sweden
Duration:

One day, the animation follows the music, the next day the music follows the animation.

Phantasme
Director: Charlotte Åberg and
Florence Montmare
Sweden
Duration: 03:02 min

Phantasme, is a video created in collaboration with the artist Florence Montmare, USA. The work reminds us of female stereotypes that showcase TV commercials. A woman uses whipped cream to form a pastry, the act eventually turns into covering herself with increasingly large quantities of cream. Her body is transformed and distorted beyond the unrecognized. She finally appears as a ghost or "phantom", the image of her desire.

The Daydreamer
Director: Charlotte Åberg
Sweden
Duration: 04:14 min

The movie describes an inner journey, a jungian individuation where a woman meets herself and shadows from the past. The setting is Stasi Museum, former safety department for the DDR-regime. The woman walks around inside the museum wearing a dress that matches the period features of the 1960’s environment. It is hard to determine if she is in the present or not. Heavy memories and something unexplainable glimpse by behind curtains and polished furniture.

Feel feel my heart expanding
Director: Ebba Bohlin
Sweden
Duration 01:00 min

When I was waiting for my second child, a new neighborhood began to be built nearby, on the old seabed. 4000 miles of iron piles were laid down in the field and that winter it was impossible to escape the sound. The frozen ground and the beatiful battles. It was just to surrender, to stop struggle agains it. I thought it was like life inside me, close to my heart - my heartbeat was just as relentless. The city, life around as an indifferent organism in constant change, to adapt to that to life itself.

Dog Glossary
Director: Edwin Rostron
UK
Duration 01:01 min

An experiment, to make a one minute film using one book as source material. The book, picked at random, was a guide to breeding Collies. The photographic illustrations were redrawn and presented as ‘animated’ cycles of still images. The soundtrack is a recital of the book’s glossary (slightly abridged), with a pre-existing track by my frequent collaborator Supreme Vagabond Craftsman, the inclusion of which perhaps breaks the ‘rule’ of solely using the book as material. I was struck by the severe, strict restrictions and rules of dog breeding and training that the book described. The film is a poem that expresses a stifling sense of order and stasis, underneath which violent, repressed urges struggle to be contained.

Like a Mirrored Pool
Director: Eivind Landsvik

Like a Mirrored Pool is a story of friendships and memories, and the means of defense we use to explain and process our personal sense of guilt.   Myth of the Cicada
Director: Emma Löfström
Sweden
Duration: 04:12 min

This short animation is exploring the world from the perspective of the cicada, seeing without being seen, unfolding a foreign place through a vision distorted with desire. The cicadas were important creatures in Greek mythology and philosophy, according to this myth that appears in a dialogue between Plato and Socrates, the cicadas were once human. Intoxicated by music, dancing in trance they loose their lives through exhaustion. The muses reward their passion, and allow the dancers to undergo a metamorphosis, returning as cicadas to a life dedicated to music. This story is taking inspiration from the extraordinary life-cycle of the cicada and intrigued by the song of the cicada, at the same time persistent and ecstatic, this animation is investigating the exotic using hand rendered drawings and stop-motion animation to create a wordless hypnotic voyage.

Sleeping with the Fishes (2017) is an abstract surrealist collage made in honor of Luis Buñuel, who wrote, ‘Give me two hours a day of activity, and I’ll take the other 22 in dreams.‘ My experimental films look at the spectator. I am drawn to the surreal and enigmatic, although much of my work responds to environmental and political issues. I create abstracts, slow films, hypnotics, and video installations.” – Gwendolyn Audrey Foster "Sleeping with the Fishes"― Video and music by Gwendolyn Audrey Foster.

Duration: 08:21 min

Steps: One and Steps: Two are the first two installations of my horror-inspired video series, Steps. This series is based on the relationship between partners, a man and a woman, and follows how what is between them is gradually corrupted. My aim with this series is to literally build one layer of video over another, while developing a thread of a storyline revealed gradually with each new episode. The first video sets the scene with foreboding, the next is layered over the first video with more information about what is and what will transpire..

4.33
Director: Lars Arrhenius
Sweden
Duration: 04.33 min

"4.33" is an interpretation John Cage's work 4.33.His silent composition is the work that embodies the concepts "silent" and "nothing", the terms he worked with in his music. In my interpretation, the sound and the image are intertwined and become something out of nothing. What you see and hear is your own noise that the brain produces at silence, for example, when listening to Cage's work 4.33. Or less pretentious; It's a broken screen that goes bananas!

Mountain in Shadow
Director: Lois Patiño
Spain
Duration: 13:52 min

Mountain in Shadow is a poetic meditation on the convergence of man and landscape by the Spanish artist and filmmaker Lois Patiño. Shooting from above and using stark, mostly monochromatic hues that almost look like film negatives, Patiño transforms skiers into small, otherworldly figures moving across a mountain’s unchanging immensity. The result is mesmeric – at once uncanny, haunting and sublime.

Another Wall, Another Door
Director: Katie Armstrong
USA
Duration: 07:04 min

In Another Wall, Another Door, we run down never-ending corridors and climb endless stairwells, looking for something that we can’t quite name. Using hand-drawn animation cycles and layered vocal loops, the work explores identity, memory, and repetition. The imagery is dream-like, shape-shifting and flowing. It illustrates an internal world using the artist's personal language of symbols and signs. Another Wall, Another Door is, in turn, deeply autobiographical, yet it evokes questions and feelings that are universal.

Director: My Lindh
Sweden
Duration: 07:47 min

Along the Stockholm–Uppsala route, the train travellers one day suddenly encountered disjointed lines of text in the landscape similar to the subtitles used on TV and in films. Made in the shape of banner-like signs secured in the ground along the railway tracks, they caught the attention of the travellers with questions and thoughts over the six-month duration of the installation. Through the questions that are posed, an inner dialogue is established in which the viewers are allowed to find their own answers.

In Anticipation of the Unexpected (excerpt)
Director: Matthew Lessner
Sweden
Duration: 03:42 min

In Anticipation of the Unexpected" directed by Matthew Lessner and produced by Johannes Palmroos is an ongoing film cycle that explores the deconstruction of narrative and the ensuing impact of context on meaning, belief and reality. Produced in various phases, the cycle consists of an ever growing body of modular short films. These selfreferential films adhere to the same selfenclosed aesthetic system, yet are produced without specific narrative intent, and often in a highly spontaneous manner. Meaning within the cycle arises on an evolving and subjective basis when the individual films are presented as a unified whole in a continually randomized order.

The Tame and the White
Director: Shiva Anoshirvani
Sweden
Duration: 10:00 min

Set in an idyllic rural stable a couple of children are fighting for the upper hand. Owning a horse, being able to handle the horse, and having the right equipment, gives certain privileges. But the stable doesn’t seem a democratic environment. On the contrary, the context reveals the radically different terms for being allowed to develop knowledge and skills, and thus, the potential to attain a higher position in the strict hierarchy. The way in which the girls handle the horses, and each other, uncovers a state of subjection and struggle. The barking of a dog between the scenes from the stable and the riding course eventually turns into a pleading for help, or possibly a battle cry.

Asparagus
Director: Suzan Pitt
USA
Duration: 17:30 min

This candy coloured nightmare rocked audiences upon its release and catapulted maker Suzan Pitt to the front ranks of indie animation. Stunning cel animation propels its blank-faced protagonist into the world of the phallus, rendered here as a field of asparagus, which she deep throats, excretes and flushes away...The film's stunning set piece occurs before a claymation audience who gape as the artist opens her Medusa's box to release rare wonders. A moving meditation on art and the cost of reproduction, Asparagus remains, twenty-five years after its release, a benchmark of single frame intensity.

Duration: 10:39 min

The animated film VISITATION unwinds through a dark landscape of unending life and death; steeped in the alchemical and inner dream life the film explores a black and white landscape of gothic figures who enact evolving metaphysical dramas . Surrealistic and strange, cast in grainy 16mm images, the film allows an imaginary glimpse within "an outer-world night”. . The visions in the film are summoned from the film maker's imagining of a mythical eternity which is beautiful but fraught with pain, exposed by the ether voices and figures which inhabit the eternal ballet beneath our consciousness.

Fight
Director: Steven Subotnick
USA
Duration: 03:45 min

Fight is inspired by the bravado of frontier tall tale contests.  A confrontation between two characters escalates from posturing into a fist fight.  The film is also an experiment in identity.  Each actor is comprised of a multitude of different character drawings, unified into a single identity through registration and movement.  Likewise, their dialog is a collage of many different vocalizations, cut up and recombined to create an abstracted argument.

Lunatic
Director: Åsa Ersmark
Sweden
Duration: 05:31 min

The film developed while the artist started photographing and documenting the lunar cycle from her balcony. Ersmark suggests a return to a natural way of experiencing time, while at the same time experimenting on something completely unnatural. Through the film we become part of the uncanny and even psychotic experience of existing simultaneously within several points in time as the different phases of the moon flicker in front of our eyes. Time appears not as a linear structure, but rather as a structure consisting of several parallel planes. The work features music by artists Simon Mullan and Theodore Trottner. The haunting pulsation of the beats builds the sensation of being out of control, a sensation amplified by the hectic rhythm of the images. The artist invites us into the realm of the uncanny; one with unexplainable dreamy elements, where notions such as time appear as a mythical entity.
